Farewell from Outgoing Club President Seemant Chaturvedi '85

August 2014

Dear Princetonians:

Since 2006, I have had the honor of serving as President of the Princeton Club of Michigan. I hope that I have contributed to the Club’s revitalization and growth during these years.
We have had several memorable events during these years, including the presentation by Professor Jeffrey Eugenides at the DAC, a luncheon and concert at the DSO, and several Annual Dinners at the Birmingham Athletic club.

Michigan has been a great place to raise a family and I will forever value the relationships that I have made in Southeast Michigan among both Princeton alums and the larger community.

Things change in the world of medicine and I have been offered an excellent position in the Neurology Department at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. As a result, I will be relocating to south Florida during the month of August (despite the August humidity). I have a feeling that I will enjoy south Florida in January, especially when I see news reports of snow storms up north.

I would like to recognize the many years of service as Club Treasurer of Jeff Page’64. Jeff has been a vital part of the Club and in addition to serving as Treasurer since 2006, Jeff is a past President of the Club.

I am pleased that Talbot Payne and Dunrie Greiling will continue to serve as leaders with the Princeton Club of Michigan going forward. In addition, several new members have joined the Club’s Board. Feel free to contact Talbot or Dunrie if you have any specific ideas for the Club or if you would like to become more involved in Club programs.

I wish you all the best for the future. Hope to see you in south Florida or at Reunions in the future.

We are seeking at least three new Board members, especially from Classes between 2000-2013. We are also looking for a Parent representative of a current undergraduate student at Princeton.

Our goal is to have 3-4 events per year but it depends on the energy of our members. We have over 700 Princeton alumni in Michigan so we should have a vigorous and energetic Club.

Alan Mann, PhD Professor of Anthropology

What Does It Mean To Be 'Human' and How Did We Evolve This Unique Capability?

Bio: Alan Mann (Ph.D. University of California, Berkeley ) is a physical anthropologist with a primary interes in the fossil evidence for human evolution. His current research focuses on the evolution of the Neandertals and their relationships to modern peoples. A particular interest of his is the origin of language and its importance in the emergence of the quality of “humanness”.

He has done field work in South and East Africa, Israel, Iran, Afghanistan, Croatia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Germany and now works primarily in the southwest of France. He is co-director of the excavation of a Middle Paleolithic site in the Charente Department of southwest France where Princeton students excavated last summer as part of the university’s summer course on modern human origins.

He is the author of Some Paleodemographic Aspect of the South African Australopithecines and is the coauthor, with Mark Weiss, of Human Biology and Behavior: an Anthropological Perspective as well as more than 75 articles in professional journals and popular magazines. He has also written a children’s book on human evolution.

He has been a consultant for the National Geographic Society and is the Anthropology consultant for the World Book Encyclopedia. He has served as a consulting forensic anthropologist to many cities in the northeast and he says that discovering clues that helped to free an innocent young man from imprisonment was the best thing he has ever done.

Professor Mann teaches courses on human evolution, human adaptation, biological anthropology and the concept of race. Professor Mann also teaches a summer course which is held at the University of Bordeaux, where he holds a research appointment.

Dr. Mann is an avid (perhaps even a fanatical) cyclist. He commutes by bicycle from his house in Princeton every day, rain or shine and has cycle toured extensively throughout Europe. Each winter, he participates in both downhill and cross country skiing. He reads widely, especially historical fiction and histories, at the moment focusing on World War I. Finally, Dr. Mann is a woodworker and general handy person. He built his house in Philadelphia from scratch and is now occupied in designing and building furniture of modern design.

Princetonian Debuts at Michigan Opera Theater - November 2012

An outstanding Princeton graduate (See Cover and article in March 17, 2012 edition of PAW), Anthony Roth Costanzo ’04, will perform the role of Tolomeo in Michigan Opera Theatre’s production of Handel’s Baroque opera “Julius Caesar” in his debut performance in Detroit. A professional singer and actor whose career in musicals and operas started at the age of 13, Anthony Roth Costanzo began specializing in opera while at Princeton and is one of those rare male singers who have mastered the art of singing countertenor operatic roles.

My friend Lucas Zavala '13 and I are bringing ten other Princeton students to the Detroit metro area from Saturday 10/27 to Thursday 11/1 for a Breakout trip. Sponsored by the Pace Center for Civic Engagement, our trip will explore the issues facing the American automobile industry through meetings with the companies as well as give us firsthand experience with Detroit through volunteer efforts.

I would like to provide the following updates:
1. Richard Spina '83 has agreed to join the Club officers as secretary. David Williams '94 will move to the position of Vice-President.
2. SAVE THE DATE OF OCTOBER 15 - The Club will have an evening meeting with guest speaker Seema Chaturvedi. The title of her presentation is "The rise of India and what it means to you". Venue to be determined. For full disclosure, she is my spouse and the other Club officers approved her talk.

4. The new Detroit Symphony Pops schedule has some excellent programs, including Music of the Beatles in Feb 2009 and Music of Billy Joel in April 2009. If anyone is interested in coordinating a lunch and concert program, please contact me.
5. We might be meeting with local Penn alumni to watch the Princeton-Penn football game at a local sports bar. Details to come. Look forward to hearing from some volunteers.

1. I am sorry to report the tragic news that one of the Club officers, Dr. William Crowley, recently passed away. Bill was a great supporter of the Club and he will be missed.
2. On a more positive note, I am pleased to report that Mariah Zeisberg from the Univ of Michigan has agreed to co-chair the Princeton Prize in Race relations committee for the Detroit region.
As you will recall, this program encourages high school students to develop projects aimed at improving race relations in their communities.
There is information on the program on the University website.
WE STILL NEED 2-3 ALUMS WHO ARE WILLING TO SERVE ON THE COMMITTEE TO HELP SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THE PROGRAM AND HELP JUDGE THE APPLICATIONS.
IT SHOULD NOT BE A HUGE CHUNK OF TIME.

Talk Description: Judicial review is usually understood to be inherently antidemocratic, and politicians frequently decry the "judicial activism" of out-of-control judges. In practice, however, the U.S. Supreme Court has often exercised the power of judicial review in ways that win political support for the Court. National political leaders have often found it in their political interest to support the active exercise of judicial review and protect the Court from its critics. Judicial activism is not simply an assertion of will by independent judges; politicians have encouraged and supported judicial activism and the rise of judicial supremacy.

Bio: Keith E. Whittington is William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Politics at Princeton University. He is the author of Constitutional Construction: Divided Powers and Constitutional Meaning and Constitutional Interpretation: Textual Meaning, Original Intent, and Judicial Review, and editor (with Neal Devins) of Congress and the Constitution. He has published widely on American constitutional theory and development, federalism, judicial politics, and the presidency. He is the author of the forthcoming Political Foundations of Judicial Supremacy: The Presidency, the Supreme Court, and Constitutional Leadership in U.S. History, and editor (with R. Daniel Kelemen and Gregory A. Caldeira) of the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Law and Politics. He has been a John M. Olin Foundation Faculty Fellow and American Council of Learned Societies Junior Faculty Fellow, and a Visiting Scholar at the Social Philosophy and Policy Center, and a Visiting Professor at the University of Texas School of Law.
